You're Invited: Poetry Festival begins Friday!

LRN
Award-winning performance artist Jason LeVasseur and two published poets from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro will highlight the 2007 Poetry Festival, scheduled for Jan. 19-20, at Foxcroft.

LeVasseur, a popular college campus performer, kicks off the weekend with a show Friday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library. Assistant director for the Center for Creative Writing and the Arts at UNC-Greensboro Josh Exoo and Fred Chappell Poetry Fellow Sarah Rose Exoo will read from their works Saturday morning. The Festival also includes a “Poetry Slam" Saturday morning and readings of original and published poetry by Foxcroft community members in the afternoon.

The public is invited to attend all or part of the program, free of charge, as space permits. Please call 540-687-5555 for more information.
An award-winning singer and songwriter known for his smart, story-like lyrics and poignant acoustic arrangements, LeVasseur has opened for the Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, John Mayer, The Roots, The Wallflowers and other national acts. He was named Campus Activities Magazine’s Best Small Venue Performer in 2003, 2005 and 2006 and Best Musical Performer in 2004 and 2005. LeVasseur’s recordings include Live in Lyndonville (2006), Driver is the DJ (2005), The Opening Guy: Live at Eddie's Attic (2003) and Watching the Girls Go By (2001).

Currently a Nashville resident, LeVasseur has lived and performed all over the world – from Belgium and Mexico to New Jersey and North Carolina. His travels have influenced his playing style and his world view, providing material for the often-funny stories he tells during his engaging live performances. His dynamic, high-energy show drew much acclaim at the 2002 Foxcroft Poetry Festival.

Josh Exoo attended Sarah Lawrence College, majoring in Creative Writing and Literature with a minor in Buddhist Studies. He is currently completing an MFA in Poetry at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he also serves as assistant director for the Center for Creative Writing and the Arts. Exoo won the 2004 Lucy Grealy Prize for Poetry and was a finalist for the Morton Marr Poetry Prize in 2005. He has been nominated for the 2007 AWP Intro Journals Project. His poetry criticism has been published in Review Revue and The Phoenix, and he has participated in multiple reading series in the New York area, including Letters from a Tiny Planet, Strange Tongues and others.

Sarah received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and is a Fred Chappell Poetry Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she expects to earn an MFA in Creative Writing this spring. Her poems have been published in several literary publications, including Confrontation, Quarterly and Erminus and she has written reviews for Review Revue and International Poetry Review. A former assistant editor at International Poetry Review, Exoo currently serves as poetry editor of The Greensboro Review and is a teaching intern in the English Department at UNC-Greensboro.

The Poetry Festival, a Foxcroft tradition which has brought famed poets of all styles to the independent school’s campus, isn’t just for visiting performers. At 10:30 a.m. Jan. 20, the annual “Poetry Slam” will be held in the Audrey Bruce Currier Library. A “Slam” is an informal approach to sharing poetry -- the let-your-hair-down, audience-involved kind of reading that has become popular in college towns and coffee houses across the nation. Original works, presented dramatically by their student-authors, will be judged by students and visiting poets in an elimination-round format.

At 1:30 Saturday afternoon, formal poetry readings will be held in FoxHound Auditorium. Competitive student readings, which culminate a month-long selection process, will feature students from each grade who have been nominated by their peers and qualified by faculty judges. Non-competitive readings – by students and faculty -- of original poetry, poetry written in a language other than English and favorite published poems follows.
