1. To increase the awareness of and understanding of Southeast Asia.

2. To provide a framework in which to study the diversity and contrasting cultures of Southeast Asia.

3. To gain a working knowledge of the physical and cultural geography of Southeast Asia.

4. To view the role of Southeast Asia in world affairs, both historically, today, and in the future.

5. To reflect on the mixture of continuing traditions and changing dynamics which characterize the societies and cultures of the area.

6. To look at the relationships and mutual influences, both political and cultural, that exist between the countries of Southeast Asia and the United States.

7. To assess the future of this strategic area of the world both for international security as well as economic development.

8. To consider the unique natural ecosystem and the biological diversity of this region and to consider the environmental health especially in light of the tsunami of 2004 and its aftermath and implications.
