Expanding the Classroom
12/11/2009
A report from English and Latin teacher Glenn Kantz . . .

This semester, we have had some unique and exciting opportunities to expand the English and Latin curricula into venues beyond the classroom. I have been inspired by the ancient Romans, who used the same word, "ludus," to describe a game and a school lesson. With that interesting juxtaposition in mind, I have included, I feel, some creative ways for my students to get involved:

English 101

  • Students have been doing creative writing all semester.
  • We have been reading and discussing USA Today articles each week.
  • Students attend a monthly "book club," where they discuss outside reading.
  • The class website, kantz.wikispaces.com, includes class notes and calendars, as well as diversions and fun activities.
  • There has been a weekly English Department "puzzler" game that has challenged students and faculty alike.
  • Students and faculty have been encouraged to contribute to the "what are you reading" section of the class website.
  • Students competed in a holiday story contest, with the top two stories featured at the Holiday Party.

Latin

  • Students recently played a game of Trigon, a Roman throwing and catching game
  • Students wrote a children's book involving a duck and an aqueduct. Look for it in the Library!
