The Mars Scholarships
Incoming freshmen may apply for the Mars Scholarships, two four-year merit scholarships endowed by the Mars family and Mars Foundation. The total amount of funding awarded to Mars Scholars may include a combination of need-based and merit grants and varies depending on a family's ability to pay tuition.
The Audrey Meyer Mars Scholarship is awarded to students with demonstrated ability in Science and Mathematics. The Virginia Cretella Mars Scholarship is awarded to students with a demonstrated ability in the Literary, Visual, or Performing Arts. Students are selected on the basis of evidence of high motivation and performance in one or more of these academic areas as well as a commitment to community service.
To apply for a Mars Scholarship:
1. Complete the application form.
2. Write an essay describing interests, accomplishments, and goals in the related areas.
3. Submit letters of recommendation from the Head of School or Principal, a teacher in a related discipline, and a person with whom they have worked in community service.
4. Complete the regular application process for admission to Foxcroft School.
5. Candidates' families must also complete the financial aid process.
The Mary Louise Leipheimer Scholarship
Established by a loyal Foxcroft family, the Leipheimer Scholarship is named in honor of Mary Louise Leipheimer. The current Head of School, Mary Lou has devoted her entire professional career to Foxcroft.
The Leipheimer Scholarship is a four-year scholarship awarded to "a student who possesses the ability to work hard and play hard. This student demonstrates the qualities, often overlooked in young people, most exemplified by Mary Lou: honor, dedication, loyalty, humor, grace and an understanding heart."
Class of 1949 Scholarship Fund
Established in 1999 by the Class of 1949 as their 50th Reunion Gift, this need-based scholarship honors the memory of their classmates by providing the opportunity of a Foxcroft education to future generations of girls with preference given to descendants of Foxcroft alumnae who exemplify the qualities of humor, resilience, service, and originality that characterized their highly individualistic class.
Jane Moseley Crawford Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund, initiated by Ailsa Moseley Crawford ’53 in memory of her daughter, Jane ’77, sponsors study abroad opportunities for Foxcroft students who would otherwise be unable to participate in these programs. This scholarship has helped to send students to France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Syria, Jordan, Nairobi, Lithuania, Eastern Europe, England, Thailand, and Peru.
Foreign Service Scholarship Fund
Established in 1989, this endowment, offers scholarship aid to students who are the children of Foreign Service or State Department employees.
Foxcroft Descendants Scholarship Fund
Monies from this scholarship, established in 1977, are earmarked for daughters and granddaughters of Foxcroft alumnae.
Henry and Nancy Gerry Scholarship Fund
Family and friends established this fund in 2001 to honor the memory of Henry Averell Gerry, alumna husband, alumnae father, and lifelong Trustee. It provides scholarship support to a girl who enjoys mathematics, and who through curiosity finds new challenges, and through patience finds solutions.
Peter and Mary Chalmers Hemmenway Scholarship
Established in 1998 in honor of Foxcroft teachers, Peter and Chal Hemmenway, this scholarship funds need-based grants with preference given to the daughters of educators.
Helen Campbell Kleberg Memorial Scholarship
Foxcroft’s first named endowment scholarship and established in 1980, this fund was the gift of Helen Kleberg Groves ’45 and her father, Robert J. Kelberg, Jr., in memory of Mrs. Groves’ mother, Helen Campbell Kleberg.
Tracy Ann Louis Scholarship Fund
Given in 1978 by John J. Louis, Jr., this endowed scholarship offers tuition, grant, and loan assistance for students with proven financial need.
Reader’s Digest Endowed Scholarship Fund
The DeWitt Wallace Fund, Inc., established this endowment in 1976 to provide partial scholarships for students from middle-income families.
Josephine Kimberly Peterson Scholarship Fund
The fund for this memorial scholarship was started in 1997 by the family of ‘Jo’ Kimberly Peterson ’46. Grants from this fund are awarded based on need to girls who possess humor, kindness, and a desire to ‘give back,’ the qualities Jo Kimberly reflected in her own life.
C.V. Starr Scholarship Fund
This fund, established in 1994 by the Starr Foundation, provides scholarship assistance to students.
Barbara McFadden Wilcox Memorial Scholarship Fund
Begun in 1974 by Shirley Foederer Ames ’45 in memory of her classmate, Barbara “Bobby” McFadden Wilcox, this fund supports the Music Department and provides financial aid to students pursuing music training.
Curgie Winchester Yandell Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship, established in 1978 by Hope Winchester Pratt ’23, memorializes her sister, Katherine “Curgie” Winchester Yandell ’24. As decreed by Mrs. Pratt when she bestowed her gift: “May it bring rich rewards to some lucky scholarship girl!”
